From the short story, Bricks...
“I HAD A ROUTINE masonry job, easy maintenance I call it, 12x8x8 inch roughhewn bricks containing a shrub corner to a parking lot in front of a professional building. Entirely adornment, unnecessary for structure. There is a lot of street traffic visibility and I had tiered the work initially, stepping up from the curb level about four feet in height. My measurements were sound, and I always had the right number of bricks. I was halfway through at 10am, the area having been landscaped the day before making my job a little easier.
“There is much to appreciate in the work I do: it is outside, I am always unsupervised, and in my mind, I get paid for the job whether I do it in five or fifteen hours. Physical, coarse, heavy, and better work than my master’s degree would ever have given me back in my old life.
“I hate it. I started masonry ad hoc a month after my wife left me two years ago.
“But sometimes there are incidental perks. Today three women stood resolute on a small patch of public sidewalk about 20 feet from where I worked. I wasn’t directly in their line of sight, but I could see them unobstructed, and I could hear them all clearly. I am invisible to everyone.”
