Why Republicans Will Lose 50 Seats in 2026.

Donald Trump has let his own perceived strengths become his weaknesses.
The Republicans will lose the House and maybe the Senate because two core reelection groups will pull a D lever or just not vote: Hispanics and small biz owners.
IMMIGRATION
The US border is closed, which is a crucial reason he was elected. But the method and minions have damaged the R brand with a cudgel.
The ICE and Border Patrol optics in Minnesota are only a small piece, but a very powerful one. Two unarmed agitators were shot by ICE/BP. They did not deserve to die, and although it was absurd they put themselves in a position with that potential outcome, public execution is wrong, wrong, wrong. The officers involved needed better training, better supervision, and a better temperament. They will likely be charged with crimes at the state level.
The Minnesota politicians are not blameless. Walz, Frey, and Ellison all fomented and encouraged citizens to disrupt ICE in the legitimate performance of its duties. The politicians told their LEO to stand down and not support ICE. That was not just irresponsible, it was morally criminal, and they have blood on their hands.
But this is not a moral issue. Interfering with LEO of any branch is just plain stupid. LEO has a monopoly on violence, and you and I do not. Cooperate, get out of the way, go yell at your cat, but stay clear of cops doing their job… or better yet, go about your business without interfering with the rest of us who mind our own.
Sandwiched in between the two avoidable killing was Don Lemon (still struggling for relevancy) and other agitators storming a church service. Arrests have been made and look for video of this and other courtroom antics to be used by Repubs in the fall… but it will be warm flat beer by then.
Republicans will lose 50 seats because of the methods used by subordinate BP and ICE people wanting to rack up a “count.” There is substantial anecdotal evidence that non-citizens who are reporting for their scheduled legitimate hearing are being arrested, detained, and sometimes deported, unless they can hire an expensive lawyer (our vaunted legal system at its best!). The Hispanic community, which largely supports curbing illegal immigration and voted a majority for Trump in 2024 are suitably outraged, and if the Miami mayoral race of last year is any indication, it will be bad for Repubs this November. This will trickle into Texas voter sympathy, too. It may self-correct, but I am not betting on it.
TARIFFS
The other issue is tariffs, or more accurately, tariff repercussion. Let’s stipulate that surgical, well-thought-out tariffs often have benefits.
Then there is the Trump administration tariff policy of flying by the seat of its pants. The unpredictability component by itself hurts business and costs consumers.
While there is much to laud in lower gas and other commodities prices, 315 US farms filed for Chapter 12 bankruptcy in 2025, a 46 % increase from 2024. (Chap 12 is the farm version of Chaps 7 and 13).
Farmers are Repub base voters. Some were bailed out to a nominal degree with our tax dollars, but I suspect they would have preferred staying in business in a semi-free market without the restructuring, keeping employees on the payroll, providing disposable income to local venues, allowing related business functions to keep their shops open… the list goes on.
The campaign rhetoric of “these countries have been ripping us off” is nonsense. If one nation in one commodity has an egregious imbalance, correct that one with a plan.
The willy-nilly 100% to 50% to 10% to 15% is amateurish and irresponsible and businesses effed up by this administration’s tariffs will vote for the other guys or just not at all. No, Mr. Trump is not a genius in this respect.
That is why Republicans will lose 50 seats and perhaps the Senate, too, and Hakeem Jeffries will become Speaker, and Trump will be impeached, again, and nothing gets done.
Those two groups, Hispanics and small business owners will not vote Red this year. Maybe in ’28 they will, since the D’s predictably figure out a way to throw away their advantage.
A potpouri that may make it 60 losses… The Rob Reiner tweet, the Obama monkey tweet, the Greenland kerfuffle and calling the US Supreme Court unpatriotic… none of these appeals to anyone but his bootlicking base. There will be more of these unpresidential and icky gaffes, and the independents might just say “enough.”
Then we will get what HL Mencken said almost a century ago: “Every couple of years the voters get what they deserve… good and hard.”
Peace Out.
